Gray Lace & Freeform Dreads: Month 15

image

Hello, dear lovelies.  Here we are with Month 15 of me growing my locs and they’re starting to get long. Woot!  As you can see, I’ve also started wearing beads in my hair and I’m loving the look!

Here’s what I wore.  Just like the title says, I finally wore my gray lace dress. You’ve seen me in this dress before – in black.  Of course, black lace is my favorite, but the gray is also a nice alternative to black.

Here’s my face.  Again, my makeup is lightweight for summer, but I make up for this with beads in my hair.  I purchased these beads from Heather Fish Designs.  I have thick dreads, and I didn’t realize how hard it can be to find beads that fit them.  Luckily, Heather makes beads with many sizes to choose from.  The beads I’m wearing are 10.5 mm.

Summer Goth Fashion & Freeform Dreads: Month 14

image

Hello, lovelies!  After our July 4 holiday weekend here in the USA, the rest of my work week has been busy, busy, busy!  So, this post will cover Month 14 of my locs and 3 days of summer goth fashion.  Now that we’re in July and summer will be with us for a while, I’ll share a few ways on how I keep cool and stay goth in hot weather.

One thing that helps me stay cool is a parasol.  I didn’t think it would make much difference, but boy was I wrong.   Some goths carry a parasol to keep their skin light, while others carry one to keep the sun rays from beating down on them (which also prevents tanning of the skin – duh).  The latter reason is why I carry one, providing shade with every step.  I recommend getting one in black (of course!), since black absorbs more UV rays, and also one that doubles as an umbrella.  The open-lace parasols are pretty, but they’re not that functional.  If it decides to rain on a hot day, you’ll be covered on both ends.

I also suggest keeping a hand fan in your bag.  That way you’ll always have something to cool yourself off with.  A fan is also great during in-between weather, where sometimes it’s cool and then the next day it’s blazing hot. Weather in the DMV area can be a bit “schizophrenic”.

image
Highly recommended!

DAY ONE

Here’s what I wore on Tuesday.  I do wear cotton leggings in the summer and I’m still quite comfortable.  For some reason, my legs don’t get too hot, but my upper body does!  You’ll notice that I’ve kept my neck free of chokers and heavy jewelry.  The parasol, hand fan, and all of my clothes were purchased on Ebay and Amazon, unless otherwise noted.

DAY TWO

This is Wednesday’s outfit.  Open-weave, lightweight shirts are the way to go in the heat, such as the lace shirt that I wore (with camisole underneath).  However, not all lace garments are created equal – some lace shirts can be a bit heavy.  Heavy anything (makeup, jewelry, clothing) + hot weather = baked and sweaty.  My skirt is also very lightweight and while it’s great for summer, it is NOT wind-friendly.  I am no Marilyn Monroe and no one wants to see my underwear.

DAY THREE

Here is Thursday’s outfit: HOLES!  This outfit looks hotter than it is.  The shirt has a sheer back, open shoulders, and the sleeves are rolled up.  The leggings are made of nylon, which is hotter than cotton.  However, the rips in these leggings provide air circulation, making them good for summer.

And before you leave, here’s a look at my loc progression:

I hope this long post makes up for the shorter ones that I’ve posted lately.  I don’t show as much skin as I used to, so my summer attire may still be too warm for you.  My suggestions were just that – suggestions.  Do what’s best for you.  If you like to show some skin, go for it!  Showing more skin will definitely be cooler than what I choose to wear.

How do you stay gothic and cool in hot weather?  Please share in the comments.

Lazy Goth & Freeform Dreads: Month 13

image

This month is the start of Year Two of growing my dreadlocks.  You can finally see distinct locs and I think they’ve “officially” matured.  It will be interesting to see how long they get by May 2017.

This will be a pretty short post.  Very light makeup and a very basic outfit – great for the upcoming summer months.  Summer tends to be my “lazy goth” season, so be prepared for seeing minimal makeup.

OOTD: Black Cats & 1-Year-Old Dreadlocks

image
My little Edgar

Woo hoo!  My locs are now a year old!  Time sure does fly.  “Black Cat Tuesday” is not a holiday (although it should be), but I decided to show off a couple of black cat purchases that I made.  Of course, the best black cat is my Edgar, a little stray that found me as I was walking home from work – a week before Halloween!  He’s feisty, but so sweet.  He is absolutely priceless.

I kept my makeup very basic, but I’ll show off what I wore yesterday.  I bought a Yin-Yang Cats t-shirt from Cafe Press and I love it!

I also found a black cat case for my phone on Ebay.  It wasn’t expensive (under $10) and I’m very pleased with it.  My old case was okay, but it was plain, gray, and BORING.  It had no flair to it at all.

Here’s the full progression of my locs.  I started out with 8 inches (20.32 cm) of loose hair and now my longest loc is 6-1/4 inches (15.88 cm).  Not too shabby – it’s normal for locs to get shorter before they get longer.

This concludes Year One of my crazy dreadlocks.  I’ll keep posting on my dreadlock growth for another year.  Let’s see how long they get after 2 years!

Brain Fatigue and 11-Month-Old Dreads

image

Hello, my fellow darklings.  I’m back to blogging after a 2-week mental hiatus. As some of you know, there are times when one needs a mental health break. Nothing’s wrong, life just got a bit overwhelming.  But y’all didn’t miss anything and now I’m back to blogging.

I had planned on starting the Spring/Summer wardrobe for Project 666, but it has been so cold and windy lately.  We would get about 2 days of warm weather, and then the temperature would drop.  I’m not complaining though.  The warm/cold situation is typical for Spring and it’s still not as cold as Winter.  Thank goodness for that!

Here’s today’s outfit.  Since I’ve now “recovered” from my brain fatigue, I kept my goth look simple:

image
PROJECT 666 Staples: Shredded t-shirt (S11), Long skirt (Skt2), 20-eye boots (B3)

image
All jewelry purchased on Etsy. Ebony wood stud earrings: House of Shiba, Black choker w/ black gems: Ego Driven, Wax seal monogram necklace: J & A Wares Jewelry, Silver key necklace: Fuchsia Bloom Studio

I also kept today’s makeup light.  I can’t find my black cat-eye glasses (*boo hoo*), so I’m wearing my backup pair.  I need to go to the eye doctor anyway and order more glasses, so I’m not worried about finding my black pair.  I am convinced that my house eats things, never to be found again, so I expect that my black eyeglasses are gone forever.

Next month my locs will be a year old.  Woot!  Here’s my loc progression so far:

This was a pretty short post, but I’ll have longer posts very soon for April’s birthstone and birth flower.  I’m also working on some makeup tutorials (finally), so stay tuned.

New Color for 10-Month Old Dreads

image

Hello, all.  With being sick and then having to put my sweet girl down, it’s been a rough week.  But I’m ready to get back to blogging and settling on a daily routine for myself.

I decided to (finally) bleach my roots and add a new color, “Atomic Pink” by Special Effects.  I kept the “Blood Red” color (also by Special Effects) on the ends of my dreadlocks.  I wasn’t sure about the brightness of the pink, but after getting dressed in my gothic garb, I love it!

Here’s what I wore.  I wore a black camisole under the cropped sweater, which is not pictured (I consider the camisole “underwear”).

Finally, how my locs have progressed so far:

I’m happy that I decided to bite the bullet and dye my roots.  I was hesitant, because I wanted my locs to mature a bit before bleaching and dying.  I think this new color will look even better, once my roots start to loc.

9 Month-Old Dreads for Monday

image

My locs turned 9 months old yesterday and they’re getting longer and thicker. I’m very pleased with them, so far.  However, I don’t know how I feel about my gray hairs sprouting at my roots.  I may still bleach and re-dye my roots, but maybe I won’t.  Maybe I should just embrace my natural hair color?  Hmmm.   We’ll have to wait and see.

Yesterday’s outfit and makeup were very simple.  Monday outfits tend to be simple, since I’m switching from relaxation mode (Sunday) to working mode:

Here’s how my locs have progressed so far.  I named my dreads “birthday dreads”, but my birthday is not for another 2 weeks:

This was a very short post, but the good news is I have started cooking more of my meals!  There will be future posts on different recipes that I’m trying out.  Be sure to stay tuned for more.

My 8-Month-Old Dreads & Project 666

image

Hello, fellow darklings.  One of my goals for this year is to simplify my wardrobe.  Some of us gothic people tend to not only have an extensive wardrobe, but we actually wear many items from that wardrobe.  But many doesn’t mean all.

I got rid of a lot of clothing and jewelry 2 years ago (over 175 pieces), but I had since bought many items to replace my old clothing.  The amount of new stuff that I had bought didn’t go back to the same amount that I had gotten rid of, but it was still stuff that was not needed.  So, I’m essentially back to square one.  But this time, I’m ready to get rid of more things and NOT buy more (unnecessary) stuff.

As I was researching tips on how to simplify my wardrobe (and my life), I came across a wonderful website, Be More With Less by Courtney Carver.   It’s here that Courtney introduces us to Project 333.  I strongly encourage you to take a look at her blog.  It includes tips, how-to articles, and stories of regular people who took on this project.  I think it’s doable and absolutely brilliant.

How does Project 333 work?  Courtney explains this in detail over at her blog.  The wardrobe that you create using Project 333 is called your “capsule wardrobe” in which you wear the same 33 items in a season (about 3 months).  For the next 3 months, you can switch your items to another 33 pieces.  By sticking to 33 items, you will end up getting rid of things, which is the goal.  And this is 33 items per season, so for me it’s doable and not so restrictive.

Here is a brief list of The Rules.  This project can be started at any time:

1. Choose 33 items to wear for 3 months.  This includes shoes, accessories, jewelry, clothing, and outer wear.  This does not include undergarments, workout wear, sleepwear, or sentimental jewelry that you always wear (such as a wedding ring).

These are my everyday rings. I wear these *98.3% of the time. (*Not a scientific figure)
These are my everyday rings. I wear these *98.3% of the time. (*Not a scientific figure)

2. The items that are not part of the 33, you can box it up and store it until the next season.

3. The 33 items are items that you currently wear.  Give away or get rid of any clothing that does not fit or is in poor condition.

Okay, here is where I’ve made a couple of tweaks to this project:

1.  While I have trimmed down my accessories, there is NO WAY I’m including accessories.  I’m a gothic lady and accessories are important for my wardrobe.  And I wear my jewelry all the time.  Every.  Single.  Piece.  But, I have put away pieces that would work better during the warmer months.  For example, I’ve put away jewelry that are lightweight and/or would snag my sweaters, therefore saving them for the warmer seasons.

2.  I’ve combined the 33 items for 2 seasons, giving me a total of 66 items to create my capsule wardrobe.  I did this because I tend to wear the same items for 6 months instead of 3.  Where I live in Maryland, the weather doesn’t really start to get cold until late October/early November and doesn’t warm up until April.  That means I’ll have 2 capsule wardrobes (instead of 4) with 66 items each: one for cool weather (November – April) and one for warm weather (May – October).

3.  Since I’ll be working with 66 items in rotation instead of 33, the name I’ve given for this (goth) version of the project is Project 666.  (*evil smile*)

4.  My dance costumes, jewelry, props and anything else related to dance are not included in the 66 items.

VNTGE.32-costume2
If I had to count these layers as part of my capsule wardrobe, that would be 7 pieces for this costume alone (this includes the pantaloons I’m wearing underneath these skirts and belts).

Here’s what I wore.  Just a t-shirt and pants for the day.  I’ll start listing the staples that I’m wearing in future OOTD posts.  This will also help keep track of what I really wear and what I don’t wear.  The pieces that don’t get worn in one year will be given away.

image
My staple pieces: Siouxsie Sioux t-shirt (S1), Yoga/Tribal pants (P1), and my FitFlop boots (B1). These letters and numbers are part of my own organizational system.

image

image
T-shirt and boots: Ebay, Yoga/tribal pants: Creaturre (Etsy)

Here’s my makeup.  I’ve been practicing making my eyes appear larger with white eyeliner.  False eyelashes would complete my gothic eyes, but since I wore glasses there’s no use in dealing with the falsies.

image

image
Eyeglasses: Zenni Optical, Studded collar: Ego Driven (Etsy), Inverted cross earrings: Mierda Negra (Etsy)

And here’s how my babies have progressed so far:

DRDS-1month

My locs are still losing length, but they’re getting thicker.  Either way, I’m loving the journey so far.  My hair is just as crazy as the woman underneath that hair.  Stay tuned for more OOTD posts, which will be tagged: Project 666.

OOTD & Makeup: 7 Month Dreads & Dress Lily Review

image

Hello, everyone!  Today marks the seventh month of growing my dreadlocks.  I can see them growing, little by little each month.  So exciting!  I also wore the new dress that I bought at Dress Lily.  You may have seen their advertisements floating around Facebook and other places online.  Their prices are low, but how is the quality?  Here is my review for the dress, and also for a pair of pants that I bought from Dress Lily.

Before we get started with my review, here’s what I wore on my face yesterday.  Very simple makeup, highlighted by a moon stamped on my forehead:

image

image

I wore the dress to work yesterday and I think it’s pretty cute.  I love the color! The dress is made out of a lightweight, polyester material.  I think this dress would be more appropriate for Spring or Summer, but it still works for cool weather.  My lace shirt and black leggings underneath added some warmth.  I was also worried that it might be too long, but as you can see in the photos, the length is just right (I’m 5′ 3″ / 160 cm tall).

image

image
Bohemian Style V-Neck Solid Color Sleeveless Women’s Maxi Dress” in size Large, $19.31 USD. Lace top purchased on Ebay.

image
Choker with O-ring: Ego Driven (Etsy), Crystal point pendant: Kalani’s Gems (Etsy)

Pros: Comfortable, great color, length is just right, lightweight

Cons: Wrinkles easily, low quality fabric

Dress rating: ****4 out of 5 stars

Here are the pants that I ordered along with the dress.  I’m not too happy with these, unfortunately.  The colors are printed on (the inside of these pants are plain white) and they’re not that vibrant.  They feel comfortable, but look horrid on me!  It would have been nice if the pants had a bit of flare at the bottom, although they did say that these were straight-legged pants.  I think these would look better on someone who is slender.  I have too much “junk” to get away with these.

close-up of pattern
close-up of pattern

Pros: Good length, comfortable

Cons: Unflattering on me, dull colors, would look better with a wide- or flared leg

Pants rating: **2 out of 5 stars

I had no issues ordering from Dress Lily and my items arrived within 2 weeks after I placed my order.  They do sell wide-legged, flared pants so I may place another order with them. Dress Lily is located in China and I’m in the US, so I thought the shipping time was good, especially since shipping was free.  The quality of the clothing is okay, but I don’t expect them to last very long.  Oh well, I got what I paid for.

Would I recommend purchasing from Dress Lily?  If you have a few bucks to spare and you don’t need your items by a specific date, I think they’re worth taking the chance.  However, other reviews are mixed.  I didn’t look at the reviews before placing my order, so I’m not sure if I just got lucky or if it’s a bit of a hit-or-miss with this company.  You can check out some of the reviews here.

FINAL RATING (out of 5 stars):

Dress: ****4 stars

Pants: **2 stars

Shipping time: ****4 stars

Average rating: ***3 stars

And last but not least, here’s how my locs are progressing:

My locs are starting to grow downward, which means they’re getting longer.  Woo hoo!  You can check out my video review on my Dress Lily purchases, below my signature.  TTFN!

OOTD & Makeup: 6-Month-Old Dreads

image

My dreads are now half a year old.  With Halloween and my Raq Out performance now done, I’m finally able to post my progress on my “babies”.  They are still looking crazy and I still love them.  I’m growing more and more attached to them as the days go by.  It’s an incredible journey into my crazy hair.

I decided that the “half-way mark” of my locs deserved a fresh dye job.  I was thinking of bleaching the roots, but I think I will wait until they’re at least a year old, although I don’t really mind having dark roots now.  Since I dye my dark roots along with my locs, they just blend together.  I may never bleach them, to be honest.  I have nothing against bleach (obviously), but even bleach at a low volume (I used 20v on my loose hair) is damaging to the hair.

We’ll start with my outfit of the day.  I wore the blue tunic dress again.  It seems I’m always wearing this dress at the beginning of the month, but it rained yesterday and this dress, along with my 20-eye Doc Martens, are nice to wear on such days.

image

image
Blue dress: purchased at DC Fashion Week, Leggings: Amazon

image
Studded choker: Aeon Leather (Etsy), “Resplen-dance” ribbon necklace: Sciscitor (Etsy). I love this necklace, but I’m not too fond of the ribbon. It’s pretty, but I prefer something more sturdy. I’ll probably replace the ribbon with a leather or silk cord.

Here’s my makeup.  It’s hard to see in these pictures, but I added a little bit of glitter to my eyelids. The glitter is Too Faced® Glitter Dust** in “Nude Beam”.  The glitter bits are small, perfect for when I want to wear glitter with minimal bling.

**I purchased this online, but now I can’t seem to find it to provide a link.  Has this product been discontinued?

I’ve noticed a significant change between last month and now.  Not only is my hair darker at the roots after re-dying them, but my locs are not sticking out like they did in October.  I was sort of bummed, but then I remembered that I do want long locs.  It looks like they are starting to “lie down” a bit.  After realizing this I’m delighted!
