A Birthday Post for February’s Birthstone: Amethyst

Today’s look is inspired by the lovely Amethyst, my favorite birthstone.  Out of all of the birthstones, amethyst is the best one, since today is my birthday (*wink*).  Just in case you’re wondering, I am now the “tender” age of 43.

Amethysts were believed to have special powers to both stimulate, and soothe the mind and emotions.  Amethyst has always represented February, in which the Ancient Romans dedicated to their water god, Neptune.  It is also the stone of St. Valentine and represents “faithful love”.  Named after the Greek word, ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated”, amethysts have been used to prevent drunkenness.

That’s it for now.  My apologies for the delay in getting a new post out.  It’s been cold and therefore, I’ve been lazy.  More posts coming soon, I promise.

OOTD & Makeup for February’s Birthstone: Amethyst

I honored the all-mighty Amethyst yesterday with a sparkly tikka and basic eyeliner.  What makes the amethyst “all-mighty”?  For starters, it’s purple.  But the main reason?  It’s my birthstone and that’s why it’s the best!  Tee hee.

According to the American Gem Society, the ancient Greeks and Romans believed that the amethyst helped to “keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted”.  It was believed to ward of intoxication.  Amethysts are used to heal circulatory issues, pain, insomnia, and arthritis.  They also symbolize “meditation, peace, balance, courage, and inner strength”.

For me, this shade of purple signifies royalty.   There’s a color named “royal blue”, but where’s “royal purple”?  When I searched for “royal purple” on Google, the first hits were of a trademarked motor oil (!).

Here’s what I wore yesterday:

Scarf: Ebay, Amethyst ring: Bethesda Flea Market & Antiques, Tikka: Bliss Berry Blue (Etsy)

Here’s yesterday’s face.  I kept the makeup light, since it was cold and I was running late.  I think it was a good choice though, since I was wearing a big, sparkly tikka:

And guess what?  Not only is amethyst my birthstone but my middle name, Denise, comes from the Greek god Dionysius, the pagan god of wine!  No complaints about that!

Dasia Denise
